Here are 5 of the most common causes of lower back pain, and solutions to them.

Everyone has experienced lower back pain at one point or another. It can be quite unpleasant and last a long while. However, it is possible to relieve it without necessarily rushing to the doctor. Sometimes all you need to do is make a few lifestyle changes.

That said, you should know that if your pain has turned into a chronic condition, it’s best that you see the doctor. Still, prevention is better than the cure, in many cases.

Obesity

One of the main causes of lower back pain is excessive body weight.

Research has shown that people who are overweight have much higher chances of developing lower back pain. The first thing you need to do is to stand in front of the mirror and take a good look. If you see excessive body fat, that could be the culprit.

By losing weight, you will either diminish your pain or get rid of it altogether. Movement and a healthy diet are things to look into.

Ligament sprain

This is a very common trauma which one can get simply by picking something up from the floor. This malady causes spasms and lower back pain. Depending on the severity of the sprain, it can last from several days to several months.

You can’t really prevent every case of a sprain, but by exercising the muscles of your core and back you can diminish the chances of getting a sprain significantly.

To diminish the swelling that often accompanies a sprain, apply ice to the affected area every 2-3 hours. Remain as mobile as you can. Just lying down and not moving can exacerbate the situation.

Disc damage or hernia

The vertebra are separated by discs which enable movement. Damage caused to such a disc can cause back pain. If the outer surface of the disc is damaged, it could apply pressure on the nerves, causing pain.

The main cause of disc damage is age. However, smoking and the lack of mobility can expedite the oncoming of the disorder. The best prevention is to say no to bad habits and to begin an exercise program.

Weak muscles and poor posture

Poor posture is one of the main causes of lower back pain. When you sit at your desk all day in uncomfortable positions, leg muscles stay stationary for too long and cause pain that becomes intensified if your core and back muscles are not strong enough.

The best solution here is to maintain correct posture and take breaks to move around. This will enable the muscles to return to their natural position and reduce the chances of back pain.

Osteoarthritis

Arthritis is a general term that describes a multitude of syndromes that cause pain and swelling in joints. Deformed bone and joint tissues can exert pressure on the nerves, causing back pain. The main causes of osteoarthritis are obesity, diabetes, age, and genetics.

Here again, the best medicine is prevention. A great choice in physical activity can be those in which stretching is present, such as yoga or gymnastics.
